The great Woolacombe title robbery!
18th February 2009
The Juniors took Millfield by storm at the recent National Stillwater Championships and retrieved 2nd just behind Woolacombe who pinched the title away from their grasps with less then 100 points between the two clubs. Bob Bunney sent the following into the North Devon Journal on the Juniors success:

"In the Junior event on the Sunday the two North Devon teams again were neck and neck but holders Woolacombe just held off the challenge of Saunton to retain their title.

Saunton Sands' Scott Stitt won all but one individual event in the 19 age group and even in this was a close second to team mate Alex Bunney."

The final scores were:
  • 1st Woolacombe: 2020 points
  • 2nd Saunton Sands: 1927 points
  • 3rd Portreath: 825 points
  • 4th Blyth: 802 points
  • 5th Rhoose: 720 points
  • 6th Heanor: 544 points
  • 7th Hayle: 455 points
  • 8th St. Ives: 325 points
  • 9th Rascals: 254 points

Bob has also sent in many snaps from the event, of which you can see in the 2009 Nationals Gallery, by clicking here. Good job Juniors!

The Juniors in Europe...
1st October 2008
Saunton Sands own Scott Stitt, Alex Bunney & James Bunney both recently took a trip over to the Netherlands to compete in the European Junior Lifesaving Championships representing Great Britain. As Bob Bunney writes below (Of which may also be inside the North Devon Journal), there's some pretty fine results:

"Scott Stitt (18), Alex Bunney (18), James Bunney (16) from Saunton and Katie Devine (18) Joe Devine (16) and travelling reserve Dan Shapland from Woolacombe returned to Bristol Airport from the Netherlands last night having competed in the European Junior Lifesaving championships over 10-11th Sept in the pool at Eindhoven and over 12-13th on the beach at Scheveningen.

Sisters Joe and Katie won gold and Silver respectively in the Beach flags competition with Joe just nipping in ahead of sister Katie who had controlled the event throughout until that point and Bronze and fourth respectively in the Beach Sprint and Silver in the beach relay with team members Sara Rowe of St Ives and Lara Evans of Rhoose.

Alex won gold in the Board race with brother James claiming silver in the choppy onshore conditions. Scott and James picked up 11th and 12th in the surf swim and Scott a 7th in the beach sprint with all three of them winning silver in the beach relay anchored by Mumbles bay flyer and winner of the boys beach sprint Lawrie Jones.

The British team took the beach/ocean aggregates in both boys and girls and of course overall categories.

The British Boys team were 9th of 12 countries in the pool with the highest results coming in 2 relays in which the North Devon trio combined with Thomas Jagger of Leeds to score two 6ths. Scott Stitt pulled out a 4 second personal best in the individual 200m obstacle race to come 11th out of 36 competitors.

The British girls came 7th of the 12 countries in the pool.

Alex tells me the French and Italian teams are mainly international standard competitive swimmers from Olympic level squads and it is always hard to stay in touch in the pool but the beach and sea events are where we come back especially if as on the first day there is 3 ft lumpy onshore swell which on the flat North sea beach at Scheveningen seemed a bit like a typical day this summer at Saunton!

Celtic Youth Team teams made
12th August 2008
Paul Reid has gotten in contact with a message from Dave Worms concerning Devon's Youth Team:

"Hello everyone
I know some of you have been waiting for this email so here it is

Before you all read the attachment please take note that the selections this year in some of the age groups have been extremely difficult and I know there will be some people who will disagree with me.? I have tried my best to select a team who I think will stand a good chance of challenging Wales for the title. I have had to select as well taking into account pairs and team events so some of the selections take into consideration peoples skills in these events.

If anyone does not agree with my selections please bear in mind that I have liaised with a lot of other people who I consider have relevant knowledge of Devon Surf Life Saving and taken their views on board.? As I have stated previously I have no personal interest in the selections as I have no children eligible for the teams.

The Development Team is selected to compete at the same competition and hopefully to build our squad within Devon for the future.? I have had to go on what I have seen and been told this year reference this team in some of the age groups and again some people may not be happy, but if you do not show up for events or selections it is hard to pick you.
The under 19 boys group in this team is incomplete at this time as you will notice and I have a number of people who are in the frame for this space, the unfortunate thing is I have not been able to see these people in action against each other or at all this year so far, so I am waiting until the Youth Nationals to make a decision and will speak to the persons concerned before or over that weekend.? If any u19 men wish to speak to me beforehand reference this please ring me for a chat.

Enough of me at this time, well done to all selected and please can you all email me with your replies if you are willing to compete or not, and if so I will need your DOB's and qualification dates for awards.

Any other queries etc please feel free to contact me

Thanks
Dave Worms

Juniors going national...
10th August 2008
With the juniors nationals approaching, you'd be crazy not to take a look over Dave Worms letter (If you have not already), as well as the additional information concerning such an event underneath this wording:

"Hello everybody with an interest in the Celtic Cup Youth Team Challenge to be held at Aberavon on Sunday 31st August 2008

I have returned from my holidays and am in the process of securing sponsership for team clothing for both teams..
I will be announcing the teams early next week following the Nipper Nationals as I need to see some of the Nipper juniors against each other.

I appreciate some of you will need to consider accommodation for the event but I feel it fairer to wait for the Nippers to complete their competition first.

I have been contacted by some people and it feels if some of them are trying to place certain pressures on me reference selections.
I must point out that as previously stated that I take information from a variety of sources ref selections and not only the SLSA rankings as not everybody competes in these for a variety of reasons. I also liaise with other coaches and people who I consider to have relevant information not only from Devon clubs but also at a National level including other selectors (senior and youth).

Considerations for the Devon team are not the same as GB Youth team selection as stillwater results and abilities are not needed and the GB youth do not need to ski paddle or compete in Oceanman/woman events, all of which are in the Celtic event.
I therefore do not need to be reminded or in fact informed that if people have made GB Youth team training squad that they should be in the Devon teams. Remember also that the GB teams have the luxury of 6 males and females and the Devon team has only 4 per age group.

I appreciate the above may rankle some persons but I do not like to be pressured into decisions that may not be the best for the Devon teams. Remember I am picking a team that includes selecting for pairs and team events and I have to consider how people can fit into these well.
I do not know at this time if the second team will be a scoring team as I await further contact from the organisers, but if people do not want to be considered for the second team and only the first please then make yourself known and I will select accordingly.

I have fought to be able to take a 2nd team so that more of you can have a go and experience a different enjoyable event, please do not as somebody has stated consider it as a 'Glorified training session', the second team participants will not be treated any differently by myself and will still receive kit and be expected to compete well and hopefully prove my selections wrong.

We stand a very good chance this year of beating the Cornish again and if all goes well maybe the Welsh and I will be selecting for that reason not to satisfy peoples egos, I have no personal interest in the selections as I have no children eligible so my selections are totally impartial.

If anybody wants to reply to the above please feel free to email your concerns and I will endeavour to answer them, but please do not contact me if it is only to try and force your views on who I should select, Remember you do not have to take part it is for people who want to take part in good grace and experience something new or compete in an arena that they have not experienced before.

Dave Worms
Devon Youth Rep
"

Furthermore, entry for the Juniors is £4 per event. There is also an extra event for 13 year olds! The Ocean Boy/Girl (With no ski's involved!) is the name of this event and if you would like to enter into it please simply just add an extra box on your entry form and return it as usual before Tuesday 12th August 2008. This event is also £4 entry.

Youth Nationals Entries...
30th July 2008
Bryan Smith has gotten in contact with a message for all competitors in the upcoming youth nationals at Portreath on 23rd & 24th August 2008.

If you wish to enter, you will need to fill in an entry form and return it with the correct fee by 8th August 2008. As well as this, please note that all awards also need to be up to date by 10th August 2008 - See Colin, Richard or James for all of this.

Where can you find one of these entry forms you ask? Well it's available right here, as well as further information including a covering letter for the form, plus contact information, and you can find it all by simply clicking the link below:

Darn Woolacombians!
9th April 2008
Rob Bunney has sent in a few snaps from the recent Youth National Stillwater Championships that were held at Bath University. Alongside this he's also divulged what you may just be reading in this weeks North Devon Journal. It's all below, the gallery link following the story!

" On Sunday 30.3.08 the Youth Stillwater Surf Lifesaving championships were held in Bath university 50m Pool.
Last year Saunton were third with just under half the points of winners Woolacombe and Saunton were delighted after a fantastic effort from the youngsters hauled them up to second place only 78 points behind especially as Tom Howe, national standard swimmer recruited by Woolacombe only 2 weeks ago accounted for 46 of those in individual events alone.
Heats were swum on submitted times so medal placings within age bands are hard to confirm yet but of course numerous medals were won.

Points were:
  • Woolacombe 774
  • Saunton 696
  • St Ives 407
  • Perranporth 393
  • Mumbles 271
  • Blyth 261
  • Pen Y Bont 223

This leaves the local rivals on 2 wins apiece in the National still water events this year with Saunton taking out the Seniors and Masters and Woolacombe the Nippers and Juniors.
Roll on the Beach and Open water events.
"

The Gallery not only includes pics sent in by Mr. Bunney himself, but also for the first time the team shot is also presented in Saunton Sands Wallpaper format, with 6 screen resolutions supported! Now you can get in the team spirit everytime you turn your computer on!

To view the Gallery of the events doings, then give your left mouse button a good clicking right... here!

If there are any previous team shots (Or any large image you have seen on the Saunton Sands website) that you would like converted into a Saunton Sands Wallpaper, or if you would like to see more wallpapers like this when new galleries are uploaded to the website in the future, please get in contact via E-Mail (Address at the top of the page as always). Enjoy!

Second chance for Juniors with Californian Dreams!
7th April 2008
Lifeguarding in the USA!

You may previously remember a news post concerning a new TV series which is set to be produced concerning juniors who wish to be put through their paces in an American Lifeguarding training season. Well TV producers Rival Media has once again gotten in contact as some of the conditions of entry have slightly altered.

The applicants must now be able to travel to America for between 17th July 2008 & 17th August 2008 for the new 4 week long course. The alteration in date also means that applicants must now have a birth date of between 17th July 1990 and 17th August 1992. Original applicants who just fell short of the age range may now be eligible and year twelve students who were previously due to be at school may also now apply.

Rival Media
"This series really is a fantastic opportunity offering young British teens the chance to get fit and gain an excellent qualification whilst having a fantastic summer out in America. Taking part will incur no expenses to the individual, therefore this chance is open to every teen so long as they have the drive and ambition."

The original news article (With updated information) can be seen below:

Juniors hitting Aberavon hard
29th August 2007
Bob Bunney & Bryan Smith have sent in messages and pics galore from the recent Juniors Nationals. You can see them all by clicking here.

Bryan, Colin & Nick have the following message for all you Juniors out there:

"We would like to say Well Done to all the juniors who took part at Aberavon on the weekend. Saunton came 2nd, the under19 boys came 1st and we also won the intermediate team trophey making the under 19 team the best in Britain!. You were all great and there was a super team spirit throughout the whole weekend despite the wet and windy weather. Thanks also to all the parents that helped with the team you were also brill. Now set yourself 3 goals for next year- 1 find someone you want to beat, 2 improve on one skill and 3 win the juniors next year!! We can do it! Well done again to all fantastic result."

Bob Bunney also sent this into the North Devon Journal on the recent Junior Nationals from Aberavon:

"The Junior Nationals were held at Aberavon over 18/19th August weekend
With high tide early Saturday morning the first event was the tube rescues but after the first few races in the choppy 3 foot conditions with driving rain and poor visibility the crew of the IRB reported they were unable to see the competitors as well as watch out for a wave that could turn them over so the event was halted until 1pm and then only beach events held during the rest of the day. Of course it poured with rain all day and although sunday was dry a strong NW wind ensured all competitors struggled to keep warm as the sea events were held without a break all day finishing about 6pm with board rescue and ski relays cancelled through lack of time
Holders for the past 2 years Woolacombe, Saunton, Mumbles and Welsh champions Rhoose were obviously in close contention after the Saturday although no scores were given out.
Woolacombe performed very strongly throughout the Sunday particularly with their large nipper Junior section (in which we only had one boy) but then Rhoose scored wins in numerous ski events and relays with their competitors handling the messy, dumping surf very well.
Final points scores of the top ten clubs were:

  • Aberavon 208
  • Perranporth 367
  • Llantwit Major 499
  • Mumbles 587
  • St Ives 850
  • Pen Y Bont 854
  • Portreath 971
  • Rhoose 1573
  • Saunton 1767
  • Woolacombe 2011

Saunton won back the 17-19 year overall and 17-19 year boys trophys from last years holders Woolacombe."

Juniors Invasion
10th March 2007
With the recent success of the Nippers at the National Stillwater Championships in Swansea National Pool, Wales, we thought it'd be wrong to deprive you of seeing the same kind of madness when the Juniors did the same thing, so Bob Bunney has sent in some pics of the recent event, and you can see them all in this gallery (Click Here)! Enjoy!

Saunton Sands Sweeps Swansea
28th May 2006
Now that's a lot of S's for a headline, but the Juniors were more then happy to make the headline what it is by bringing home more then one gold when they recently travelled to Swansea to take part in the Junior Stillwaters of 2006. As the image (Left - Click to Enlarge) shows, 24 Gold medals, 6 Silvers, and 4 Bronze medals were brought back with them - Wouldn't you look as chuffed? Nice work Juniors!
