Masters Ski Training Saturday!
7th October 2009
Keith is also on the topic of the day with a message for all Masters concerning Ski training! It reads...

"For those Masters who would like to improve their Ski paddling feel free to come along to the river on Saturdays. To avoid hindering the Youths Sunday training I think a Saturday session is the answer.

Recent tuition has improved me on my own technique (on flat water!) and I am very willing to pass on these tips to newcomers etc. I wish to improve my own paddling so have come up with a plan to build gradually through out the coming months on the river with a view to moving on to more interesting open water challenges next year. If any one is thinking of Ski racing next year then now‘s the time to get base work in. For more details, times etc then please contact me.

Keith.
"

Got Qualifications?
23rd May 2009
Keith Watts (Masters Coach) has requested the following information be posted for the attention of all Masters have not yet become qualified members.

"Masters who are NOT qualified are:
  • Unable to represent the club and compete in competitions as individuals or team events (only on beach events)
  • Limited ONLY to using equipment on training nights when other qualified members are present, this is then stopping them doing their training.
  • Supposed to use only swell type boards or the Rescue (Yellow boards) before using the more expensive Racing boards.
As explained on Weds evening, the quicker members are qualified it will help everyone around. So can you please enrol on the next course/dates ASAP?

Contact myself, Richy, or Dave with your thoughts on what you want from the club / what awards suit you.

We are trying to help you so can you help us to move on with this.

The next time surf conditions will probably be bigger and therefore I/we will probably have to stop you using club equipment from a safety aspect, not something I/we want to do ok.
"

Ski Training Day
26th February 2009
There's a Ski training day for Juniors, Seniors & Masters just around the corner at Exmoor - Sounds good... right? Dave Worms has all the information:

"Sunday 15th March

Youth, Seniors & Masters
(Nippers can come and run around while mum & dad have a go!!!)

Ski Training Day at Wimbleball Lake & Watersports Centre, Exmoor
10am until 2-3pm
Minimal cost to cover launching fees at the lake.

All club ski's including doubles will be at the lake and instructors will be on hand to teach you whether new to ski's or had a go before and want to improve technique.
If you have your own ski come along and use it.
We will probably take up a few racing boards so people can have a go on those without those nasty waves getting in the way.

There are hot showers at the centre in case you fall in and get cold, but that won't happen!

Any volunteers to help, either coaching/instructing, driving club van with trailer or transporting kit themselves please contact Dave Worms.
"

Masters show off at Millfield!
18th February 2009
The Saunton Sands Masters really showed off their skills at the recent National Stillwater Championships at Millfield by not only taking the title but by doubling 2nd place Woolacombe's score! Bob Bunney sent the following into the North Devon Journal on the Masters work:

Click to Enlarge"On Saturday and Sunday the 14th and 15th of February the Combined UK Surf Life Saving and Royal Life Saving Society National Championships for Seniors (Open) and Masters were held in Millfield School 50m Pool.

Croydes team comprised only the Latham Brothers Warren and Shaun who both did very well.

Saunton were thrilled to add these two crowns to that of the Nippers this year and with their Juniors coming runners up to local rivals Woolacombe by less than a hundred points the competition as events move to the beach and open water this summer seems certain to be very close.

Saunton Masters team:

Dave Worms, Bryan Smith, Gary Potter, John Irwin, Simon Derges, Andy Bray, Neil Richardson, Martin Purchase, Geoff Priddis, Pete Dyer, Simon Luton, Colin Davie, James Birkley, Bob Bunney, Colin Leaper; Sally Bunney, Heather Eltringham, Ali Priddis,Sue Allen, Melvin Eveleigh, Pete Purchase.
Missing from the picture: Louise Clarke, Kath Paton, Anne Baines, Dan Halsey, Matt Tozer, Mark Plumridge, Phill Hill and Tim Chesworth"

The final scores were:
  • 1st Saunton Sands: 1772 points
  • 2nd Woolacombe: 681 points
  • 3rd Portreath: 675 points
  • 4th St. Ives: 340 points
  • 5th Perranporth: 316 points
  • 6th South Worcester: 254 points
  • 7th Dawlish Warren: 215 points
  • 8th Crawley Town: 129 points
  • 9th Crantock: 98 points
  • 10th Croyde: 90 points
  • 11th North Worcester: 59 points
  • 12th Rhoose: 41 points
  • 13th Swansea: 40 points

Bob has also sent in many snaps from the event, of which you can see in the 2009 Nationals Gallery, by clicking here. Can anyone stop these masterful Masters?

Masters in the Burrows
17th January 2009
Keith has sent in a few words concerning Saturday beach running & training. Read on why don't you...

"Beach running ‘up and running’ on Saturday mornings @ 09:00 ‘sharp’ from Braunton burrows car park.

Session is approx one hour including warm up and warm down so nothing heavy. The plan is to develop a base and then build on through out the year. Sprint training will be added later on once the legs can handle the strain.
Take it from me if you improve your cardio through running (which is cheap, apart from travel!) then all our other events become easier to work on as you are able to concentrate on their technical side and not just be knackered from just raising your heart rate.
“Obvious” I hear you say so why aren’t you down there joining in?

I will confirm if training is on each week via the ‘Shout box’ on the clubs website.

Rain is no problem but strong winds are tough down there.

Keith.- coach.
"

That final Masters Devons Entry Form is now here
18th December 2008
The Nippers, Juniors, and the Seniors can enter the Devons 2009... but what about the Masters? Late entries will cost you £15 on the day... that day being Saturday 31st January 2009, with the event taking place at North Devon Leisure Centre (Registration 9:30am, warm-ups from 10am). The second link above (The entry pack) contains all the details you could possibly need on the Devon Stillwater Championships event.

Finally, Keith has also sent in the following message for all:

"Can I apologise for the multiply photo shoot (of myself) in the recent Journal. I was hoping they would print the group and maybe ONE action shot, me in front of ‘Legend Lazy’ (he can be beaten!) but oh no they managed to print the rest, normally only ‘Woolly’ get this treatment!

Happy Xmas to everyone and keep up the training, I will be running over the break so if any one is interested in joining in our growing squad please get in touch?
"

Masterful Snaps
28th August 2008
Pete Cropper has gotten in touch with Saunton Sands SLSC.co.uk to let everyone out there who is interested that all the pictures taken by himself and Zoe of the Masters Nationals 2008 can now be found online on the website below.

Unfortunately photobox has lost the correct order the photo's should be in so they are a bit jumbled up!

If anyone would like any copies or prints of the photo's then don't print them direct from the website as they have been shrunk and their quality has been reduced. Instead simply get in touch with Pete, making sure you have the reference number of the photo (It will be in brackets after 'SSSLSC-Masters08 (XXX)') and he can send you back copies of the original photo, or any prints you might like in any size. He can also tweak the colours a bit so they are a little more vibrant to make the day look less overcast!!

Masters entries...
4th August 2008
Keith has E-Mailed in to let all those Masters out there know that you need to get your entries back to Keith by Wednesday (Or presented on Wednesday evening training).

The cost of each event on the timetable is £4, although the timetable has not yet been made available.

Wednesday training will be dependant on conditions, but based around pair events.

Latest Times
6th July 2008
Keith has e-mailled in with some Masters results and notey bits:

"Oceanfest 08 Aquathlon:

Oliver – (swim relay) 14:45
Tim (swim relay) 15:03mins
Matt – (total time) 47:20
Per – 48:11 (fastest run 29.03)
James – 48:34
Keith – 48:56
Andy - 50:17
Bob – 2nd in age group (good swim, but wrong time given) 53:35
Pete – (knee injury) 60:47

This was an excellent race, flat sea but tough run around the down end side of Croyde footpaths/dunes.

Hopefully more club members will be up for this next year?

Woolacombe Ocean swim:

New event this year was a straight swim (42 entries) from the Black rock (Putsborough) back to Woolacombe beach (2.5K).

Conditions were spot on with a tail wind and a flat sea.

Apparently (as we couldn’t see it) the race between Legend Nick Thorn and our very own ‘Jimmy D’ was awesome.

Both taking the lead, exiting the water and sprinting to the line to a photo finish!! Only took them 28 mins.

Finishing order of Saunton;
James Dallyn Joint 1st
Abigail got 2nd in age group
Matt 10th
Bob 11th (got 1st in age group)
James 17th
Keith (421/2 mins)

This was well organised with RNLI water cover and all our members receiving a spot prize, well worth your entry fee!

It is hoped to make this into an annual series competing at the ND three beaches, not to be missed….

Keith.

Keith's Masterful Training Notices
2nd July 2008
This week's Masters training sees the phrase 'no pain, no gain' probabily come into a bit of play, with Keith planning on the following:

  • "Wednesday: Hopefully we can get last minute 'Ocean man/women' training Weds evening so stand by for pain!!
  • Friday: Choose from either long swim or the Black rock run, i know the costs go towards 'Woolly' but as i said i will be doing a return event to get them to visit us.
  • Sunday: Devon's at Saunton, you can still enter if you wish but please see me Weds evening.
  • July: Looking at running sessions on Sunday's if interest is there. Again speak to me asap if it suits you?"

Masters times, sessions, membership reminder and Devons info
30th May 2008
Keith has sent in the latest bunch of Masters test times. You'll find the link to them straight after a few words from the coach himself:

"The rain dropped off for everyone to enjoy a PB on the run test followed by a swim session. Good to see everyone having a good go at in's and out's techniques.

Next week will be a run/swim/board combination circuit, with a possibility of a ski session if Nick/Colin is available and conditions favour.

Remember, no membership, no craft usage, i have warned you as insurance cover is a big issue.
"

The latest masters times can be found by clicking here! [.xls file, Microsoft Excel Required - 47kb]

Next week Keith will have forms for the Devon's and will start taking funds. If you were wondering or are confused on the matter, the Masters Devons are 29th June 2008!

Some bits for the Masters
23rd May 2008
Keith has gotten in contact with some information for Masters, also concerning membership fee's.

"Masters who are not members:
  • Can you ensure you have paid by the next Weds evening please.
  • If you have not paid I can not allow you to use club equipment for the obvious reasons of not having insurance cover etc.

I must apologise to Masters who couldn’t use club equipment on Weds (board session) due to Senior age groupers present.
I do not want to discourage new starters but in future I will be making sure that this can’t happen as Senior’s training is on Thursday evenings.
I want to concentrate on the Masters towards championships coming up so please cooperate with me on this.
I hope everyone enjoyed the session but with so many turning up now (excellent) it causes issues with managing the session to cope with all abilities.

I am available to those who need more advice on Board tuition/techniques (knees, knees, knees) so please feel free to contact me on either of the following:

Details held in a image file for security purposes

Have a ‘butchers’ at the attached and remind yourself of it the next time you are out on the board.

Next week, will be the ‘timed’ run followed by a swim session.
Hopefully both Dave and Brian (level 2 coaches) will be alongside me to help with techniques and encouragement!
"

'The attached' can be found... right here! [.doc file, Microsoft Word Required - 48.5kb]

Award, anyone?

Time Check?
17th May 2008
Keith has gotten in contact again with more Masters Fitness times from the most recent test session, and with all the moving and shaking going on in the tables you'd be crazy not to check out your latest time and see if you've bettered yourself or to see if you're maybe just getting lazier! Link at the bottom, after a brief few words of wisdom from the man himself:

"Well done to those who took part in the 2nd run test, very good improvements by most on a windy (ish) evening. The course was pretty much the same route (+/- couple of meters) depending on how you approached the last beach straight. You can now see who your closet rivals are so next time the challenge is to beat them!

Points to note:
  • Please bring suitable running footwear as I wouldn’t like to see anyone sidelined by a silly cut etc (or snake bite!)
  • There is no excuse for taking the wrong route as we did do a complete warm up circuit, may be it was the ‘yakking’ that distracted you!! (simon… caz…. pete…)
  • The final couple hundred meters or so should be feeling ‘uncomfortable’ and replicates the final meters of the 1km. Your gains will show when it comes to the Nationals, so keep regular attendance and come August we will rule.

Also thanks to Dave for his in/outs coaching, this will develop more as the water warms up and becomes more inviting.

Keith
Masters Coach
"

And now for that link to the latest set of test times... clicking here! [.xls file, Microsoft Excel Required - 24.5kb]

Next week see's a board/swim session take place, so make sure your arms are well prepared - Regular press-ups will also tone the chest and triceps - Give it a go!

Dropping times?
1st May 2008
Keith & Dave has gotten in contact with a message for the surf life savers of the Masters variety out there:

"Well done to those who made the ‘Wintery’ Weds session and took part in the first run test followed by Dave’s drills.

Good effort by everyone and look I forward to seeing times dropping over the next couple of months as fitness improves!
"

You can check out the latest test times by clicking right here! [.xls file, Microsoft Excel Required - 16.5kb]

As a reminder, for next week's session you'll need to have your wetsuits at the ready for some in's and out's techniques - Sounds fun, if you're into that kind of thing!
